I often ask my clients if they have tried to introduce their work to a mainstream publisher before coming to me. Many people have, but the standard response letters can leave you feeling disheartened and unworthy. Many publishers will simply not accept ‘unsolicited manuscripts’ and will only look at books put before them by a literary agent.
Entering for a prize is a great way to get noticed. The Bloomsbury New Children’s author prize is for previously unpublished authors, and is looking for work aimed at 8 – 12 year olds. There is an entry fee of £30, but this money goes to the National Literacy Trust, and the competition is not part of a money making scheme, as so many of the paid writing competitions are.
They are offering a £5,000 payment and a publishing contract for the winning entry, pretty good returns for a competition of this sort!
If you’re interested, or you know someone who might be, then do use the link to their website below and read the full terms for how to enter… the closing date is the 30th of September, so get your skates on! And if you’re not so lucky this time, why not come back to us for a chat!
